Wide-gap plate heat exchanger for general heating, coolingand heat recovery of media containing fibres and coarse particles. In addition the wide-gap channels are suitable for highly viscous fluids.
The plate heat exchanger consists of a pack of corrugated metal plates with portholes for the passage of the two fluids between which heat transfer will take place. The plate pack is assembled between a fixed frame plate and a movable pressure plate and compressed by tightening bolts. The plates are fitted with a gasket, which seals the interplate channel and directs the fluids into alternate channels.
The number of plates is determined by the flow rate, physical properties of the fluids, pressure drop and temperature program. The plate corrugations promote fluid turbulence and support the plates against differential pressure. The number of plates is determined by the flow rate, the physical properties of the fluids, the pressure drop and the temperature program. The plate corrugations promote fluid turbulence and support the plates against differential pressure. The Wide-gap plates feature coarse corrugations with a cross-section width of approximately 11 mm (5/12”) between the plates, and have flat non-corrugated portholes for the product channels. The Wide-gap plate heat exchanger canbe used in two configurations, Wide gap/Narrow-gap and Medium-gap/Medium-gap.
The frame plate and the pressure plate are suspended from an upper carrying bar and located by a lower guiding bar, both of which are fixed to a support column. Connections are located in the frame plate or, if either or both fluids make more than a single pass within the unit, in the frame and pressure plates.

The CoolSummer Shell & Plate Heat Exchanger designed as a performance upgrade over shell & tube, block-type welded and brazed aluminum heat exchangers. The exchanger offers high thermal performance with compact size, similar to that of gasketed plate heat exchangers, with low hold-up volume and low installed weight, especially when filled.
We are now one of beginning to explore the shell & plate exchanger’s potential in ever-more-difficult duties. In addition to design improvements, we have added larger plates and extended-thermal-length oblong plates to the product line
The heart of CoolSummer Shell & Plate Heat Exchanger is its heat transfer element, also called the plate core, composed of round or oblong chevron-type plates welded into a cassette by a porthole perimeter weld. Cassettes are then placed together welded to each other using a perimeter weld.
The thermal element subassembly then has metal shell-side flow diverters, nozzles and an end plate welded to it. An exclusive cage structure (see picture), welded only to the end cover, surrounds and supports the plate core pack assembly. The cage prevents any cantilever stresses from being transferred to the plate pack. The result is a pressure vessel of high integrity, with an accordion-like core that is highly tolerant of thermal expansion.
The construction is more robust than in gasketed units, shell & tube exchangers and welded block-type square welded units. There are no gaskets to replace or fail. There are no tubes to vibrate under upset flow conditions and induce stress to welds, baffles and supports, with early failure the result. The fully welded round or oblong design, involving both plate port and perimeter welds, is an optimal stress-distributing shape; there are no 90° corners and edges subject to stress failures as with block-type plate heat exchangers.
Field-Proven Durability
Operational durability has been outstanding. Units shipped after passing our factory standard pressure and helium leak tests have logged an extremely low failure rate in the field. Additional available manufacturing process NDEs include:
• Dye penetrant examination (all weld joints)
• X-ray (applicable weld joints)
• UT (applicable weld joints)
• Helium Mass Spectrometer (entire unit)
Duty-Matched Materials
Plate materials may be Type 316L stainless steel, titanium or other alloys; shells may be fabricated of carbon steel, Types 304, 316, 316L stainless and titanium. The unit can be fabricated from dissimilar metals when only one side will be exposed to corrosive conditions.

The heat transfer plates are two plates laser welded together as "cassettes" creating a hermetically sealed flow channel. This is reducing the contact between the critical media and the rubber gasket to a minimum. The media flowing inside the welded cassette is only in contact with a special designed ring gasket at the inlet and outlet of the cassette. This ring gasket can be supplied in other special materials than that of the traditional gasket on the Outside of the cassette, where the opposite media is flowing.
The "herringbone" plate pattern grants optimal turbulent flow, which increases the efficiency and minimizes fouling. An important advantage compared with heat exchangers of the past. The size of the flow plates can be chosen up to 1,9 m2 per plate. The slender design of the plates creates a high thermal efficiency gaining high "thermal length".This often results in a "single pass" solution for solving many tasks, and allows for all the connections to be located on the head of the frame. This makes pipe- and service work easier and exhange of flow plates takes place without removing any pipes. Further easy draining, effective and easy CIP cleaning and the possibility of "back-flushing" for cleaning purposes. The high thermal efficiency of the CoolSummer semi-welded plate heat exchanger results in a tremendously reduced volume inside the heat exchanger compared with other heat exchangers. This means less refrigerants and other critical medias in the system.

Design
The coolsummer spiral heat exchanger is a circular heat exchanger with two spiral channels, each in one closed chamber ensuring that what comes in also comes out.The flow of the two products is countercurrent, which makes it possible to have a close temperature approach between the two medias being treated in the heat exchanger. In the same spiral heat exchanger the design makes it possible to run free flow on the one side and standard flow on the other side.
Medias and Applications
a large variety of fluids can be suitable for a spiral heat exchanger solution e.g. fouling liquids containing solids and fibres, wastewater slurries mixtures with inert gases, cooling and heat recovery, vapour/liquid condenser, vacuum condenser with inert gases
Easy access to the heat transmission area
It is essential to have easy access to the heat transmission area for maintenance, with a CoolSummer spiral heat exchanger. This is a very easy task. Each side of the closed spirals can be accessed by opening the side frame of the heat exchanger
without any use of special tools. When opening the side frame there will be fully access to the heat transmission area on one side. This side can be cleaned without getting in contact with the other side of the heat exchanger. The side frame is designed with hinges making lifting equipment unnecessary.
A very flexible pipe fitting solution
As an extra feature the flexible pipe connections make it possible to run CIP cleaning through the installation, when required.Long-life gasket solution. The two gaskets placed on the side frames are ensuring a long-lasting solution. The opening and closing of the side frame increases wear of the gasket. Therefore the CoolSummer solution does not only have one gasket covering the hole side frame, but an edge gasket which can be easily replaced when wear occurs.
Customized solutions
No application and duties are the same for a spiral heat exchanger meaning that all CoolSummer spiral heat exchangers are always customized according to the specifications from the customer.
Saving valuable production area
The spiral heat exchangers is a very compact solution. The design only requires only a small space for installation compared to traditional heat exchanger solutions. This saves valuable production space and costs.
